Bundoora shows interest in retired Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton
RECENTLY-CROWNED premier Bundoora has confirmed its interest in retired Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton.
The 31-year-old was involved with the Bulls as a midfield coach throughout 2017 and was on the bench during their grand final win over Macleod on Saturday.
A veteran of 255 games in the red and black, Stanton has been linked with several local teams, including his junior club Banyule.
Bundoora president Bill Price said the Bulls would “certainly’ speak with Stanton about his playing future.
“When Essendon’s VFL team were knocked out of the finals and he announced his retirement I jokingly said to him, ‘we have got your contract inside’,” Price said.
“He just laughed and said, ‘if you believe all of the rumours I am playing with 15 different clubs next year’.”
Stanton would be a six-point player if he joined the Bulls, but would only be allocated one point if he returned to Banyule, which won this year’s Northern Football League Division 3 flag.
“We will certainly speak to Brent but it comes back to obviously financial compensation, we’ve got to look at the points,” Price said.
“I am sure there will be plenty of clubs that throw big money at him whether it be in metropolitan or country leagues.”
Stanton is close friends with Bundoora coach Ricky Dyson, who has been reappointed for 2018.
“When we appointed him it was pretty much ‘the job is yours as long as you are happy and the club is happy’,” Price said.
Price said the pair’s bond from their playing days at Essendon would be the likely drawcard if Stanton played at Yulong Reserve in 2018.
He said the Bulls’ premiership success had led to interest from several players keen to join Dyson’s senior squad.
“We have been approached by players from other leagues that want to come across so we are going to have a chat to them,” Price said.

“A couple of the older players said on Sunday night their bodies are just about cooked.
“They’ll sit down with Ricky and work out what is best for the club, whether they are willing to go through another pre-season.”
